Ringtones
Today it's hard to find a person without a cell phone, right!! The reason might be because of its convenience, cost, and features. One of its most significant features is ringtone. "Trends change with time", seems exactly to be true in this context. Earlier, telephone used a pair of bells to indicate its incoming call, but today mobile uses ringtones of different styles to indicate their incoming call and text messages. They have become extremely personalized and customized.
History
Japanese were the first to release the commercial mobile phones with ringtones. In May 1996 NEC (Nippon Denki Kabushiki Gaisha), a Japanese multinational IT company, released NTT docomo Digital Mova N103 Hyper, the first mobile with ringtones. It had a few preset songs in MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) format. Soon in September 1996, IDO, the current AU, sold Digital Minimo D319, in which user can input an original melody rather than the preset songs. In 1998, in Finland a mobile operator Radiolinja created and delivered Harmonium, the first downloadable mobile ringtone service. This contained tools for individuals to create monophonic ringtones and mechanism to deliver them. Later, True ringtones which are often excerpts from pop songs, have become popular. In December 2002, AU started the first true tone service. The first song distributed as a true tone was "My Gift to U" by Chemistry, a Japanese pop duo.
Types
Ring tones are of different types.
Monophonic tone which is a series of notes containing one note at a time
Polyphonic tone which contain several notes at a time.
True tone, which is a simple audio recording.
How to add ringtone to your mobile?
Today ringtone making has become very simple. You can access it very easily.
1. A ringtone maker allows you to take a song from music collection. Pick the part from it and send these files to your mobile through cables (direct connection), blue tooth, text messaging etc.
2. Many websites like Mobilephoria, phone sherper, Dope tone let you make ringtones from the music they already own. You need to upload them directly to your mobile. The music editor lets you pick the part of the song you wish to set as a ringtone.
3. A ringtone conversion package is used to convert music files into ringtones. It is software which allows you to add new ringtones to your mobiles without the need for cables or SMS services.
4. Some providers allow you to create a tone of your own. They provide your mobile either with melody composer or a loop arranger. These use native formats and are only available to particular models only.
5. Latest improvement is the Sing tone. Here you are allowed to create a ringtone with your voice recording adjusted in time and tune and is mixed with a backing track.
6. Commercial ringtones support MIDI, MP3 etc. You need to download to the phone before you use them as a normal ringtone. Even ringtone cds are also available.
Thus the recent mobiles allow their users to associate different ringtones with their family and friends.
